Barbara Sykes

Barbara Sykes is a designer of textiles; she lectures, conducts seminars, workshops and exhibits nation-wide.
Barbara' work in painting the human figure is a meditation on the human condition from birth to death. Her technique involves pouring paint and staining the paper such that the paint is allowed to flow as if organically, suggesting to her the visceral quality of the human body.
Born in 1944 in Doncaster, Barbara studied at Rochdale College of Art, later gaining a BA Hons in Fine Art from the University of Leeds. She worked initially as a textile designer in Manchester and Halifax, but latterly has lectured and taught in colleges and schools. She has had numerous exhibitions of her work in northern England, Derby, London, Southampton, Bristol, and abroad. In 1994 she was awarded the Laing Landscape and Seascape Manchester Evening News Award. A member of MAFA, her work is in collections in France, Slovenia, the UK and USA,
