Charlie Shiels

People-scapes

Charlie Shiel's paintings typically show people meeting together in social gatherings such as cafés, pubs and bars, or at out-door events. He depicts facial expressions, body language and human interactions in an affectionate but distinctively distorted and exaggerated manner.

After leaving school he did a variety of jobs while painting in his spare time. When age 29 he became a full time student, graduating with a BA Hons in fine art. He worked free lance in commercial illustration, but also took commissions for paintings. At age 38 be began teaching part time, eventually becoming a senior lecturer, but he retired from this in 1996 to devote his time fully to painting. His attention to detail is high and larger canvases can take months to complete.

Charlie has exhibited throughout the North West and at the Unicorn Gallery, Chelsea and the Woolff Gallery, Shoreditch, London and his work has been the subject of feature articles in Art Review and Artist and Illustrators magazines. His commissions include pieces for BBC Publications, the London Underground, the Lincoln Restaurant in central Manchester, Marks and Spencer, Abacus Books, Corgi Books and Waddingtons. His paintings are in private and corporate collections worldwide.
