Estelle Scholes

Estella Scholes trained as a painter and teacher in the 1970s.  She returned to painting several years ago and is currently also studying part time for a Master of Fine Art degree at the University of Staffordshire.

She translates memories into abstract forms.  Her inspiration, both for paintings and sculptures, is the transitory effects of weather, tides and the atmosphere as they alternately reveal and conceal features of the landscape while the hours pass.  She walks in ancient landscapes, noting the constantly changing views, colours, scents and textures.

This current series of paintings and collages explore those fleeting moments, those idiosyncrasies of place, as they linger in the memory, through the use of short sequences of images and sectional pieces that reflect the way we glance here and there as we walk.  Smaller acrylic paintings are presented in sets interspersed by long, horizontal paintings which consist of separate canvases attached edge to edge.  Her use of colour relies on subtle contracts of tone; grey tends to predominate: greenish grey, brownish grey.

Estella has recently extended the inspiration of memories into three dimensional papier-mâché sculptures which she calls simply 'forms' but which allude typically to the items we pass on a country walk.

She has been awarded numerous prizes in competitions, including winning the Llanderfall Annual Exhibition on two occasions.  She has exhibited at Hawarden, Chester, Cheshire, Bury and the University of Staffordshire.
