Peter Rees

Peter Charles Rees was born in Cardiff in 1962. He studied on the Foundation Course in Art, Carmarthen in 1980 and later Fine Art at Loughborough University. From 1994 to 2002 he was Director of Art at The Manchester Grammar School. He is the owner of and regular exhibitor at the Hayfield Gallery in The Peak District. Over the last 20 years he was exhibited throughout England and Wales, and his paintings are in the collections of Loughborough University; Lancaster University, the University of Wales, Eagle Star Group, The Manchester Grammar School, P & O Ferries, Hilton International, and many others.

His working methods revolve around months of travel followed by intensive periods of painting in one of two studios based in The Peak District and South Wales. In recent years this involved five months travel covering France, Italy, Spain and finally Southern Ireland. Some of the results of this trip are becoming evident in the most recent paintings.

He says "My inspiration comes from dramatic changes in landscape, in weather, light and atmosphere. Consequently travelling, mountaineering and sailing put me firmly into those conditions. I then interpret those experiences away from the subject in the studio. The paintings although influenced by that initial contact very much go off in their own direction depending on composition, colour, surface etc. I would say the most recent pieces have become increasingly removed becoming more abstracted from, rather than copying the concept of landscape. My feelings are this will go further as I find the formal qualities the changing tempos of colour, surface and texture increasingly absorbing."
