Paul Brotherton







Paul Brotherton is a qualified, practicing Visual Artist, currently investigating drawing and colourist, abstract and semi-abstract contemporary painting.
Paul has held six solo exhibitions; at the Blyth Gallery, Brazil Street, Manchester (2001, 2004 & 2006), the Lennox Gallery London (2003 & 2005) and the Castle Park Arts Centre, Cheshire (2008). Paul has also participated in many group and open exhibitions. Venues include Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, GMEX Manchester Central and the Turnpike Gallery. He has twice been invited to exhibit work at the Royal College of Art, London. Paul is also a qualified teacher in post-16 education, with wide experience of devising, teaching and evaluating lectures, workshops and courses. He currently holds a part-time post as "Drawing and Painting Tutor" at the Turnpike Gallery (Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust) and has given talks at Rochdale Art Gallery and the Salford Museum & Art Gallery. He has lectured at both the Lempa and Larnaca campuses of the Cyprus College of Art.
Born in Sale, Paul lives and works in Cheshire. He studied Art & Design Foundation at Sheffield and was awarded a BA Honours in Graphic Design from Wolverhampton. After art college he lived and worked in Keswick for two years before travelling the world for four years whilst working for British Airways. This extensive experience of travel still provides countless creative inspirations for his art. Paul then worked as a Graphic Designer and Consultant for fifteen years, before refocusing his practice on painting in 2000.
He has exhibited extensively since 2001 and his original works have been acquired for collections throughout the UK and in Jersey, France and Italy. Returning to education, Paul has recently been awarded two teaching certificates; the City & Guilds 7407-1 (City College Manchester: 2003) and the ASET Award in post-16 teaching: Art & Design (Cyprus College of Art: 2008). In 2005 - 2006 he studied for twelve months in London; reading postgraduate 'Art and Design in Education' at the Department of Art, Design & Museology at the Institute of Education, Bloomsbury (the University of London).
More recent travels to Africa, the Far East, Europe and Cuba have provided new influences. Paul's work is inspired by many things including: landscapes, cities, books and films as well as artists such as Kandinsky, Rothko, Pollock, R.B.Kitaj, Slana, Fiona Rae and Beatriz Milhazes.
