Mel Brown

Mel Brown was born in Bury in 1972. She displayed an artistic talent from an early age. Following her graduation with a teaching degree in art and design from the University of Manchester she became a teacher. Over the years she has developed a distinct style, characterised by horizontal white lines in an atmospheric abstract space. She draws her ideas from nature, particularly the sky and sea, with their ever changing and captivating colours and light, but she paints from memories and imagination rather than direct.

Her style is minimalist and tranquil. She says of her paintings, executed in textured oils and acrylic paint on large canvases, that they "peaceful yet bold . . . a chance to see the world through her eyes". This is significant because she is partly colour blind and deals with this through a restricted range of colours and variations of shades of greys, creams, energised by pinks and purples.
