John Walsh

Nature Pure and Simple

Exhibition until 28th February 2009

John Walsh is a member of the New Manchester Group and has exhibited previously at the Blyth gallery. He was born in Widnes in 1937 and became involved with art in the mid 1970s as a director of the Weaver Gallery. In 1993 he gave up full time employment and started to develop his painting career. John's earlier training was in architecture, and drawing is still an important part of his discipline and the technique.

John is an oil painter whose subject matter is simple and refreshing. He paints what he sees. Being of an age that does not embrace technology, he tries not to complicate nature, or what man has built into the landscape. Walsh's subjects are important to him - nature in its infinite beauty - a butterfly, the river bank, or a country field. And always his message is COLOUR. Whether depicting a cloudy day, a frosty morning or a scene in bright sunshine, the emphasis is always on the various hues.

It is this love of colour which dominates his technical process. He says "Once I start to paint I am conscious of getting this element right. I hope people will say "look at what Walsh saw" and be enthralled by it - and similarly enjoy the image!"

He has had work accepted by the Royal Academy, been commended by E.A.C. and has two portraits on permanent exhibition at Arnham War Museum Holland. The painting The President and the Survivor has been accepted by the American Embassy, to go on permanent display at a New York fire station. In 2003 he held an exhibition on behalf of The Francis House Children's Hospice and has donated key works to hospitals, including The Christie. He has work in collections throughout the UK and in Holland, South Africa, Spain and the USA.
