John Booth
Bitumen Artist

John Booth was born in 1942 and grew up in Glasgow, moving later to Stockport where he worked as a roofer for a local roofing company for 35 years. Following his retirement, he completed a course in Fine Art at Stockport College, achieving distinction, and was awarded the Gallery Award by Stockport Art gallery for the most original painting in the 1998 College Exhibition.
Using his former tradesman skills with roofing materials, he has turned 'the black stuff' into a vibrant means of artistic expression. The intense semi-matt black, often applied in swirling lines, increases the intensity of underlying colours and can give a very rich glowing effect. His abstract work is nevertheless drawn from nature and maintains the flow and rhythm of natural forms and processes.
His first show at the Blyth Gallery in August 2000 created so much media interest that return exhibitions seemed inevitable.
