Ettel

Estelle Sherman

Estelle Sherman, who signs her paintings simply Ettel, was born in Manchester and obtained her training at the Southport Art School. Her career as an artist was nurtured during a lengthy stay in Paris. Here she worked under the supervision of Jacques Yankel, a professor at Les Beaux Art de Paris. During this period Ettel developed her personal style characterised by strength of line, love of colour and surety of composition. Another influential teacher in Paris was the well known New Zealand artist, Douglas McDermid, who encouraged Ettle to explore portraiture and still life.

Since returning to England some years ago, Ettel has worked extensively in London where she held a number of successful exhibitions. As a result of one of these she received commissions from an international agency. Now living in Manchester, she continues to work in a wide variety of media, principally pastel, watercolour and oils. Favoured subjects include interiors of stately homes and continental street scenes, both executed in watercolours. Portraits are usually executed in oils or pastel and figure drawings in charcoal.

Frequent comments regarding her work have singled out her love of colour, harmony of composition and above all the provision of pleasure to the viewer. A recent passion is the sculpture of small figures in terracotta. Ettle is a member of the Whitefield Art Club and has sold her work both on the continent, in this country and in New York, her work has also been published in the French Media
