Deborah Moses

Deborah Ann Moses Moses is one of the UK's experimental and contemporary glass designers. She started her artistic career after studying and undertaking several courses in glass fusion at both Bristol and London. She creates contemporary fused glass designs, as simple and stunning as black and white.
Deborah isn't new to glass. Her family have a long history in both commercial and art glass. Her individual designs have both movement and a soft but structured nature about them, with inspirations coming from water, ice and rock formations, in addition to her Cheshire surroundings. The finished pieces have a refreshing, simple appeal.
She says: 'To me, art is a synthesis of my personal feelings… the subject, or colours that inspire me and the materials and techniques. Serenity and simplicity are my primary goals.' She adopts an old glass-shaping technique referred to as "fusing" first invented and originally used by the Egyptians. Many types of glass, or other suitable materials, are used in the fusing process to create designs and shapes which are cut, arranged or stacked while the glass is cold. They are then placed in a kiln, which is slowly fired up to temperatures in the range of 900 - 1400 degrees Fahrenheit. This heat turns the glass into the consistency of toffee and fuses the separate pieces of glass and materials together. There is a cooling phase, resulting in a single piece of fused glass with the coloured glass design embedded. Deborah then sculpts the formed glass into various shapes creating individual pieces - jewellery, platters, canvas sculptures, contemporary wall art, free-standing sculptures and innovative lighting installments. Rather than use plaster moulds, she hand carves each mould from a formulated kiln paper, which breaks down in the firing process so that, although she can replicate designs, each is unique.
Deborah Moses both exhibits her glass art and undertakes commissions from the commercial sector as well as private clients.
