Maurice Day

Sculptures

Since Maurice Day moved to the Isle of Man, he has been greatly influenced by Celtic and Viking art, as well as by the Celtic interlacing of Archie Knox, the Liberty designer of the early 1990s. His recent creations have been based on the foliate head or 'Green Man' which has a long and intriguing history from the Celtic tree gods through to the carvings of the twelfth century church masons.

Maurice Day produces dynamic drawings based on a non-conscious, automatic dotting technique, filling in with coloured pens and pastels. His intricate, most hand-sized sculptures are finely worked in resin, g;lass, stone, copper or aluminum, and may incorporate found objects.
