David Lunt

David Lunt is a Manchester-born artist who graduated from Loughborough University in 2000, with BA (Hon) in Fine Art Painting. He has continued to paint, exhibiting throughout the North West of England. In 2005 he completed an MA in Art and Design Studio Practice at Loughborough University.
Over the last few years, David Lunt's work has mainly been concerned with the processes and techniques within contemporary and traditional painting, in an attempt to create a bond between the two. His work embraces his love of the cinematic image and his interest in the use of technology within painting over the centuries. The 'Dualism' that he employs interweaves 'Abstraction' and 'Realism', conforming to a notion of 'Hybrid' painting which he feels epitomises the contemporary scene.
It is Lunt's exploration of the ideas of colour, surface, depth and innovation that has led him to experiment with photography, the internet, digital manipulation, the cinematic and different surfaces upon which to apply paint, in order to create works with more infinite potential. He draws inspiration from a number of artists, sources and genres (e.g. science fiction and horror cinema/literature, religious iconography, 'Romanticism', 'Abstract Expressionism' and the landscape).
He collects pictures from magazines, books and the internet, personal photographs and classic paintings, then, through computer manipulation, these collected images are reworked to produce his compositions. These are then reproduced in paint. Using a number of different surfaces, such as aluminum and glass, together with pigment and resin, the images are blurred and twisted to create an essence of the 'uncanny' prevalent in the horror films of the early twentieth century - particularly 'Nosferatu' and 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' - yet at the same time embracing the notion of 'Hybridity'. The results are images that resonate with some cinematic effects, with depth of field and movement, whilst aiming to remain simultaneously beautiful yet ambiguous and even disturbing.
David Lunt has exhibited his work in Liverpool, Norton Priory, Swansea, The Colony Gallery in Birmingham, Crewe, and Knutsford, Cheshire
