John Coffey is now primarily a portrait painter, working to commission. He lives in Cheshire and was educated in both art and science, and has worked as a research scientist, project engineer and business consultant.  He studied art at Manchester School of Art (now Manchester Metropolitan University) and at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education.

He works in watercolour, oils and drawing chalks, creating mainly figurative works drawn from the natural world around.   He has a special interest in painting people, and has painted portraits of the Lord Mayor of Manchester and the High Sheriff of Lancashire.  He is also keen on using computers in art, design and music, and has written several Internet web pages.  His own web page can be linked from here.  Several of his fantasy works show his interest in optical effects in nature, seen with a scientist's eye.
