Carola Colley

Omphalos

Since settling in the Isle of man ten years ago, Carola Colley's work has been dominated by the physical sttributse of the surrounding landscape. Initially this was a pure exploration of colour, shape, line and observation of the physical interactions of land, sea and sky. It was the points at which these three elements meet, the shapes so created and the consequences of these interactions which inspired her.

A successful painter and sculptor, Calola Colley was born in Malasyia in 1965, and studied in Paris and Scotland, but now works from a studio in the Isle of Man - which is the inspiration for a powerful collection of abstract work in paint, plaster and found material -- Omphalos. Omphalos, the title of her first exhibition in the Blyth Gallery, referred to an awareness of centre -- which relates to The Isle of Man which lies at the epicentre of the British Isles. Her collection develops through an investigation of line, colour and form. She draws out the inherent qualities of any given material and consolidates visual ideas by moving in and out, developing layers of meaning, instead of simple narrative story lines. Her exuberant style, has vibrant spots of colour highlighting works which capture, with sensitivity, the mood of calm contemplation.
