Mary Campbell trained as an architect in the 1960s, gaining a B.Arch from Liverpool University, School of Architecture. Soon afterwards she studied for a Master's Degree in Civic Design, also at Liverpool University. In the 1990s she turned to fine art and print making in particular, and from 1995 to1997 pursued the Art and Design modules of a BA course at Edge Hill College of Higher Education. Since about 2000 she has exhibited regularly across the NorthWest and Merseyside, including at the Blyth Gallery in 2004. In 2004 she was elected a Member of The Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.

She says of her work : "My work is grounded in drawings I make from direct experience of people and places. I need to have this physical connection with the source of my images. I value the drawings in their own right and I also use them to reinterpret images through printmaking. I particularly appreciate the creative freedom afforded by collagraphs, which enable me to manipulate form and structure while making the plate and to explore light and colour in a single inking up process. The finished print, never quite predictable, shifts away from realism. My pictures here are all figures I have observed involved in a kaleidoscope of human activity, in performance, in company and alone. Seeing them allowed me to engage in my favourite occupation of people watching. The prints and drawings aim to communicate their charisma and make their presence resonate."
