Robert Bindloss

Harbour at Canico, Madeira

Robert Bindloss was born in Lincolnshire in 1939, and spent his childhood in England's North West. He attended both Stockport and Manchester Art Schools and, on leaving, was approached by Pilkington's to enter their ceramics unit as a colour and design consultant, where he continued to work for fourteen years.

Robert eventually realised that his love of art was not being fulfilled, so he opted for change. Thus it was in the 1970s that wanderlust took him overland to the Indian sub-continent armed with camera, brushes, paint and sketch books. For a year he travelled from Kashmir to Goa, studying local art and depicting his own versions of this very visual culture. He returned to the UK with an eclectic body of work and a mind full of new possibilities.

It was this early venture into travel, renewed by regular overseas visits, that continue to influence his work today. Like all thoughtful artists, Robert Bindloss, is not adverse to experimenting with both colour and surface, which explains, in part, why he has arrived at his particular style, now being recognised as a 'Bindloss' painting. His resulting collections are atmospheric landscapes and cityscapes worked in acrylics paints, or mixed media, on paper, which is initially prepared with a wash and then continually re-worked until he is satisfied with textural compositions of built-up layers.

Robert Bindloss has undertaken numerous commissions, including London's Grosvenor Victoria Hotel and the Connemara Bus Company. His work was even 'afloat' on the SS Norway. Bindloss needs to paint for personal satisfaction, but enjoys passing on his expertise in teaching workshops. In 2002 he was overall finalist in Salford Art Club's 50th Annual Exhibition taking the The Janet Beswick Award for best landscape, and The Geoffrey Key Award for best of show. Bindlioss has staged many exhibitions throughout the United Kingdom, including the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and in Europe, including Paris, France.
